Halloween Cancelled

School District Bans Halloween

The district says Halloween celebrations and children dressed in Halloween costumes might be offensive to real witches.

This simultaneously makes me laugh and makes me nauseous.

Political Correctness is a blight upon the earth.
(Have I said that before?)

Guitar

I’ve been wanting to try to incorporate some heavy guitar sounds into my Starfinger songs lately, so I asked my Songfight compatriots if they had any suggestions for getting that sound. Here is a brief document of my attempts thus far.

For the record, I don’t know how to play the guitar. This experiment was really more about seeing what kind of tone I could get out of my crappy Gibson Jr. guitar [ don't ask ].

Anyway, I recorded a simple riff directly into a mixer, piped into my sound card. I duplicated it, and delayed the copy by a few milliseconds, and panned them both in opposite directions. Then I ran the whole thing through iZotope Trash, and fiddled with it until it sounded meaty.

MP3 sample.

Clearly I don’t know what I’m doing, but I thought this sounded pretty good considering the crappy equipment. It’s more of a testament to Trash’s quality than anything else, I reckon.

 Audio: I Don’t Like Eggplant
project: Starfinger
mp3: starfinger/starfinger-i_dont_like_eggplant-newmix.mp3 (m3u)

Here’s my latest songfight entry.

I’ve stopped posting about these prior to the fight, because I don’t want people going over there and blindly voting for me.

Anyway, I didn’t win. I’d like to think this is because the mix I submitted was pretty bad.

I did a new remix and posted it on somesongs.

Comment Spam

Both this site and my music site have been attacked by comment spammers.

I’m working on blocking future attempts at this kind of crap, but in the meantime, please ignore all comments made by “Penis Extender”.

Surely they could have come up with a better name than that! Is he supposed to be a super hero or something?

Phone Music

I wish I had a phone or PDA that supported this. It could be fun.

Site Performance

Hey, I’m getting painfully bad transfer speeds from this server today. Is everybody out there experiencing that too?

I’m sure it’s not just my server, I’m just curious how widespread the effect is.

In other news, I did a remix for the Johnny Cashpoint remix fight last night. It should show up on the site this weekend.

Also, there are some really good songfights this week.

Stupid car

Boing Boing pointed this out, and I felt like mentioning it here because I saw it in a Target parking lot a couple years ago.

Celebrity Showdown

Police Chase Blues Brother Impersonator

Police responding to a call of a convulsing Elvis Presley impersonator soon found themselves in a high-speed chase of another faux celebrity a man dressed as one of the Blues Brothers.

Just imagine the absolute mayhem that the real John Belushi and Elvis could accomplish together.

The State of Iraq

I’m a day late and a dollar short, but this is a fascinating account of what’s going on inside Iraq, from the perspective of a Wall Street Journal reporter [formerly] stationed there.
