Don’t Ask Me

While on the PATH train, this Hispanic couple showed me a map and asked at which stop they needed to get off the train. The correct answer was “Journal Square,” and that’s where I was going, so I told them I’d help them figure out how to find their destination.

The only landmark on the map that I recognized was a White Castle, so I dutifully pointed them in that direction. It wasn’t until I was finally at work, going to the bathroom, that I realized “Hey, they didn’t want to go to White Castle.”

Thanks to Gingko Biloba, I managed to bring up a rough version of the map in my mind’s eye, and I realized that the building they were looking for was right there at the PATH station.

Sorry about that, wherever you are!

Bits and Pieces

Over the weekend, I compelled myself to record. You will recall that I recently got a new, ultrapowerful music computer. Well, I was sick of obsessing over its pecularitiies, and felt like I just needed to do something. Anyway, here’s an example of what you can do with Reaktor 5 and Ableton Live in 20 minutes:

As an added bonus, I came across a ton of stuff that I recorded and forgot about. Here’s a sampling from the dusty corners of kongbalong studios:

First, a discarded entry for the Cur songfight: cursample.mp3. I think this is better than the one I actually submitted (which is available on the starfinger page).

Here is a first pass at covering Octothorpe’s Do the Math. The astute listener will realize that it sounds absolutely nothing like that Octothorpe song. That is why this ended up in the dusty corner: math2.mp3.

I don’t know what the rest of this stuff is!

Reaktor 5

Holy cow, Reaktor 5 is awesome! The premium library is amazing. I can’t wait to sink my teeth in a little deeper.

And thanks to Komplete Care, I have it before it’s even available for preorder!

Oxygen 8

What a piece of crap!

Shortly after buying it (new), the pitch bend wheel started sending ghost messages. I learned to cope with this by squeezing the controller in a certain way. Obviously this is retarded. For the record, I have read other people complaining about this.

Recently, however, a new turd has appeared on the horizon. When the usb cable gets wiggled slightly, it disconnects the keyboard from the computer. It reconnects immediately, but the software needs to be restarted before it will recognize the keyboard again.

Avoid at all costs! (Unless you want to buy mine, that is — cheap!)
